Originally from Southend in England, Mark Watson came to Edmonton, Alberta in 2000 for a PhD in Cultural Anthropology at the University of Alberta. His research led him back to live in Tokyo, Japan for two years, where he had lived during the mid-90s. With a thesis entitled Kanto Resident Ainu and the Urban Indigenous Experience, his academic interests include urban anthropology, identity, social theory, Japan, indigenous issues and visual anthropology. Watson's education includes a BA in Communications and Image Studies from the University of Kent at Canterbury and an MA in Anthropology of Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He has recently accepted a Postdoctoral position at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
