Shock Wave by James O. Born

Here are the discussion questions for this James O. Born novel featured on BOOKED. Be sure to check out the general Booked club questions posted on our web site.

  1. Author James Born is a Special Agent with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. He has spent over 20 years with the U.S. Marshals Service and Drug Enforcement Association and even worked undercover in the KKK. Born obviously has some real life experiences to draw on as a writer. Did the author's background create a sense of realism in this novel? Did the plot seem well researched?

  2. Bill Tasker is a good honest cop who got burned by the FBI when a corrupt agent tried to frame him during an investigation. His anger towards the FBI and his over-dedication to his job has strained his marriage and his relationship with his two daughters. What did you think of Tasker as a cop? As a husband and father?

  3. What did you think of the author's portrayal of his female characters such as the tough talking hard bodied ATF agent Camy Parks, the sexy housewife and sometimes stripper Alicia Wells and Tasker's estranged wife Donna Tasker?

  4. Bill Tasker's best friend is Derrick Sutter, a tough talking African-American Miami cop. Jimmy Lail is a pseudo-hip wanna be black but white as milk FBI Agent. What did you think about the use of racial stereotypes as a source of humour throughout the novel?

  5. The villain in the novel, Daniel Wells, is planning a deadly terrorist attack that would blow up a large part of Miami. Did you find his character compelling? Was he a good villain? What did you think of how he rationalized his own actions?
